WHY IT MATTERS
Mental health impacts everyone. All social classes, all races, all professions, all genders. The stark reality is:

U.S. adults experience
mental illness each year.

Of all lifetime mental
illness begins by age 14.

Leading cause of death
among people aged 10 to 34 is suicide.
How We Tackle Stigma, Together
Stigma continues to create harmful barriers that prevent people from seeking care, limit the quality of support provided by health care professionals and first responders, and influence policies that fall short of meeting people’s needs. Stop Stigma Together is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to changing that narrative by uniting organizations, institutions, and advocates across the mental health and substance use disorders space. As the nation’s only large-scale initiative focused on de-siloing these efforts, we bring together leaders in health care, research, advocacy, and lived experience to create resources, generate funding, raise awareness, and drive meaningful systems change.
Guided by a comprehensive five-year strategic plan rooted in the National Academies’ evidence-based framework for stigma change, we are tackling structural, social, and self-stigma through collaboration, research, storytelling, policy advocacy, and cross-disciplinary partnerships. Together, we are working to break down barriers, foster empathy and understanding, and build a future where healing, support, and true well-being are accessible to all.
At Stop Stigma Together, we believe your story has the power to create change. By sharing your experience with mental health or substance use disorders, you help others feel seen, understood, and less alone. Your voice can challenge stigma, spark empathy, and inspire hope. Share your story and help us build a more compassionate, connected world.
